Christian and Science

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy (p.135):
It has been said, and truly, that Christianity must be Science, and Science must be Christianity,
else one or the other is false and useless; but neither is unimportant or untrue, and they are alike in demonstration. This proves the one to be identical with the other. Christianity as Jesus taught it was
not a creed, nor a system of ceremonies, nor a special gift from a ritualistic Jehovah; but it was the demonstration of divine Love casting out error and healing the sick, not merely in the name of Christ, or
Truth, but in demonstration of Truth, as must be the case in the cycles of
divine light. [Emphasis added.]
In
this article, I will begin with the Science aspect of the name Mrs. Eddy gave to her discovery,
only because I know what I wish to say at the moment, and not necessarily because it is more important than the Christian
aspect.
Mary
Baker Eddy considered her discovery as the true, supreme science. The word science derives ultimately from its Latin root
meaning, "to know." Mrs. Eddy made clear in her writings her discovery that God is Mind, and one of Mind's functions is to
know. This knowing includes no doubt or uncertainty, but is absolute, unchanging, even law.
What
is it that God knows? His spiritual ideas, the universe, including man. Ideas are what are seen, known, by Mind, and they are inseparable from the Mind that conceives them.
Hence they are forever sustained and maintained by Mind.
The
word idea can be contrasted with the word idol
to give us an important distinction in Christian Science. Whereas both denote "an image in mind," the spiritual idea signifies
the image in divine Mind, while idol signifies the image in mortal mind--it is what that which we call me
seems to see that divine Mind
does not see, that which we call evil.
With the marginal heading, "Christianity scientific," Mrs.
Eddy implies the necessity of the science of Christianity thus: "If Christianity is not scientific, and Science is not of God, then there
is no invariable law, and truth becomes an accident. Shall it be denied that a system which works according to the Scriptures
has Scriptural authority?" (Science and Health 342:16) If Christendom resists the author's application of the word Science to Christianity,
or questions her use of the word Science, she will not therefore lose faith in Christianity, nor will Christianity
lose its hold upon her. If God, the All-in-all, be the creator of the spiritual universe, including man, then everything entitled
to a classification as truth, or Science, must be comprised in a knowledge or understanding of God, for there
can be nothing beyond illimitable divinity. (Science and Health 126:32)

Christian Science as science is infinite. It is to be studied, and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,
by Mary Baker Eddy, is the textbook. There is also sufficient supply of supporting Christian Science literature, commentaries
on the textbook and other writings of Mary Baker Eddy, waiting to be discovered.
The benefits of this science are reaped in proportion
to our understanding of it, not by blind faith. Christian Science is not a blind faith without works. Mrs. Eddy herself
studied the Holy Bible, both Old and New Testaments, and applied
what she learned. Through healing all sorts of diseases, as well as death, she demonstrated and proved her understanding
of the science that unfolded to her. For nine years after she was pulled back from the brink of death, she was engaged in
study, teaching, practice, and writing, and then brought forth her "precious volume," the 1875 Science and Health. This demonstration
of unselfish love, that embraced and transformed the sick and sinful, together with the dead and dying, she expected of her
followers also. Hence all the work she did and opposition she endured for over forty years, so that the world be not sunk
into darkness again, vis-a-vis, the loss of the science
Jesus demonstrated in his time, but was gradually lost after the first two or three centuries.

When we learn to reflect the higher thoughts of God, we experience heaven, harmony. This takes
yielding, leaving or letting go, of the beliefs common to the carnal or fleshly mind, the common beliefs of mankind as opposed
to God and His spiritual ideas.
